Pass-a-Grille is the little historic town at the south tip of St. Pete Beach, about fifteen or twenty minutes from downtown. It's quieter than the rest of the beach, and it has something most of the Gulf coast doesn't - a real, intact old-Florida street sitting right behind the sand.
The beach faces due west over the Gulf, and there are no condo towers in the way. That's the whole secret. The sun drops straight into the water, and for the last hour of the day the whole beach turns warm and glowing. If you've ever heard people talk about Pass-a-Grille sunsets, this is why. It's the spot I recommend most for couples and engagements - it's pure romance without trying.
And then there's 8th Avenue. A block of pastel storefronts and striped awnings from the early 1900s - one of the oldest little main streets on the coast. It gives us a completely different look than the beach, with color and texture and history, all within a short walk. Seniors especially love getting both in one session: the classic beach, and the editorial street.
A few things worth knowing: parking is metered along Gulf Way and fills up fast, especially on weekends, so we'll plan to arrive early. And because the light here is all about that western horizon, Pass-a-Grille is a sunset session through and through - we'll time it for the golden hour before the sun goes down.

Yes — Pass-a-Grille is one of the best sunset spots in the whole Tampa Bay area. The beach faces west over the Gulf with a clean, open horizon, and the historic pastel storefronts on 8th Avenue give us a completely different, old-Florida backdrop just a block away.
Why is Pass-a-Grille so good for sunset photos?

It's metered street parking along Gulf Way, around $3.75 an hour and enforced until 8 p.m., so plan on paying through most of golden hour. It fills up fast on weekends, so we'll want to arrive with time to spare. I'll help you time it.
