Treasure Island & St. Pete Beach, Florida
Portrait Photographer at Treasure Island & St. Pete Beach
"Gulf sunsets are underrated as portrait light. That last hour before the sun hits the water — it goes orange and wide and everything in it looks like it belongs in a film."
The Gulf beaches get a lot of attention for tourism, which means the photography there requires timing — but when you get the timing right, there's almost nothing that compares to it. The light on the Gulf of Mexico in the hour before sunset is directional, warm, and almost impossibly flattering. The water picks it up and throws it back. The sky goes colors that don't exist anywhere else. I've photographed sessions at Treasure Island, Pass-a-Grille, and Fort De Soto that still feel like my best work — partly the clients, mostly that light.
Pass-a-Grille is my most consistent recommendation for clients who want the Gulf beach experience without the resort-strip feel. The historic village at the southern tip of St. Pete Beach has old-Florida character — low-key storefronts, quiet streets, and a beach that's wide and unhurried. The western exposure is unobstructed, which means the light during golden hour is as good as it gets anywhere in the Tampa Bay area. This is where I take couples who want something that feels timeless and couples who want something that feels effortlessly romantic — it delivers both.
Sunset Beach on Treasure Island is the choice when you want maximum open sky and the Gulf right in front of you. The beach is wide, the crowds thin after 5pm, and the sunsets there are reliable in a way that makes planning easy. For seniors who want the classic Florida beach session done well — not cheesy, not generic — Sunset Beach with good timing produces images that are genuinely stunning.
Fort De Soto Park is the wildcard, and for clients who've never been, it's usually a revelation. The park sits at the southernmost tip of Pinellas County, and it has beach, bay, mangrove, and history all within a short drive of each other. The Fort De Soto beach faces west over the Gulf, but the bay side faces east and north — which means morning sessions there are exceptional if you want something different from the standard golden-hour beach shoot. I keep Fort De Soto in mind for maternity sessions specifically, because the variety of backdrops lets us tell a fuller story within a single session.
